Wikimedia.org, the group behind the successful Wikipedia.org reference site, has received a $2 million grant from search engine giant Google

Wikimedia board member Jimmy Wales, who was a key figure in the creation of Wikipedia, announced the grant on Tuesday on twitter and said a formal statement will be made today. The statement was in fact released, but the full details are not yet clear.

Google and Wikimedia said in the statement, “the funds will support technical infrastructure to support growing traffic and to help make Wikipedia “easier to use and more accessible.”

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said in a statement that, “Wikipedia is one of the greatest triumphs of the Internet. This vast repository of community-generated content is an invaluable resource to anyone who is online.”

Wikimedia is a donation funded organization; the Wikipedia foundation received some $8 million last year from over 240,000 individuals. Wikimedia is the largest source of information on the internet. The content of Wikimedia is primarily from ordinary individuals who contribute their time and knowledge to a cause.

According to the organization’s statistics counter, more than 958 million editing changes have been made to Wikimedia projects.
